Imagine hot footpaths, humidity, crowds of people, no breeze. Think yourself into NYC in late July. Bottled water, ok. But add hot streets, little shade and traveller fatigue.
The power of the ocean! This image – a live feed from Huntington Beach, California is probably no novelty for many people, but what a difference it made on that HOT day. It was probably the equivalent of watching paint dry in a way, there wasn’t much action. A couple of surfers making desultory moves, messing around on boards in the wash. The real water pool helped too, but the moving image was almost as cooling as a dip. After four weeks away from our coastal home-life I was feeling parched. I hadn’t realised how refreshing the ocean could be and how much I missed its daily presence.
No wonder I paint it.
